Is a zebra white with black stripes, or black with white?
Black with white stripes. A zebra’s skin underneath is black, and the white stripes come from its hair — on the belly you can sometimes see the dark skin showing through.
What are the stripes for?
Field studies show that stripes keep biting flies away: horseflies approach a striped surface but fail to land cleanly on it. The older idea that a moving herd’s stripes blur together and make individuals hard for a lion to single out is still debated, and the evidence for it is mixed.
Are all zebras marked the same?
No two zebras share a pattern. Like a fingerprint, every animal’s stripes are unique, and mothers are thought to recognise their own foals by them.
