What kinds of bears live in Japan?
Japan is home to two bear species: the brown bear (Hokkaido) and the Asian black bear (parts of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu). The brown bear is Japan’s largest land animal, weighing 200-300 kg, while the Asian black bear has a distinctive white crescent-moon mark on its chest.
Why do bears hibernate?
Bears hibernate because food becomes scarce in winter. They eat heavily in autumn to build up fat reserves, then lower their body temperature, heart rate, and breathing in a den and sleep until spring. Technically it isn’t true deep hibernation, since they can still respond to strong outside stimuli.
Where does the name ‘teddy bear’ come from?
The teddy bear is named after Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, the 26th U.S. President, after a 1902 story about him refusing to shoot a bear cub on a hunting trip. A toy maker who saw a cartoon satirizing the story created the ‘Teddy Bear’ in response.
