The skeleton shows how oddly proportioned this animal was: the arms are tiny while the back legs are enormous, and the skull is huge, with a jaw full of thick, sharp teeth. From bones like these researchers estimate that the largest individuals reached roughly 12 metres (about 40 ft) in length and weighed somewhere in the region of 6 to 9 tonnes.
Where did Tyrannosaurus rex live?
Tyrannosaurus rex lived in western North America — what is now the United States and Canada — at the very end of the Cretaceous, roughly 68 to 66 million years ago. The climate was warm then, with forests and swampy floodplains.
Can we tell what color a dinosaur was from its bones?
Not from bones alone. Fossil bone keeps no color, so this is one page where any palette you choose is scientifically fair. Researchers usually picture T. rex in the muted browns and greens of large living reptiles and of birds — birds are the dinosaurs’ living descendants — but that is an informed guess rather than a measurement. Color it however you like.
