The long neck lets a giraffe feed on leaves high in the trees that other grazers cannot reach — the neck alone runs to about two metres. The height also gives it a long view across the savanna, so it can spot lions and other predators early.
What are a giraffe’s patches for?
Every giraffe’s pattern is different — like a fingerprint, no two animals are marked the same, and calves inherit patch shapes from their mothers. The patches are also thought to work as camouflage, breaking the outline up into patterns of light and shade among the trees.
