In Japan the total has run at roughly five billion parcels a year in recent years, which works out at something like fourteen million a day in a country of about 120 million people. That is around forty parcels a year for every person. A single driver may cover well over a hundred stops in a shift, though the figure swings a lot with the route and the time of year.
How are the parcels loaded?
Parcels are sorted at a depot and loaded by delivery area. Heavy boxes go at the bottom and light ones on top so that nothing shifts on the road, and the load is normally arranged in the order the driver will need it, so each parcel comes to hand without a search.
What does a delivery driver actually do?
The day starts early with loading, then a route planned to keep the driving down. If nobody is home the parcel goes back on the van for another attempt — in Japan roughly one delivery in ten has to be repeated, which is why parcel lockers and doorstep delivery boxes have spread so quickly there. Add heavy boxes carried to the door in all weather and it is demanding work.
