Roll two balls of snow, a large one for the body and a smaller one for the head, and set one on the other. Buttons or small stones make the eyes, a carrot makes the nose and twigs make the arms. One difference worth knowing: the Japanese yukidaruma is built from two balls and is named after the round Daruma doll, while the snowman built in Europe and North America usually has three. ❄ Why does it snow in winter?
When the air is cold enough, water vapour inside a cloud freezes directly onto a speck of dust and grows into an ice crystal. The crystal grows on six sides, which is where the six-armed snowflake shape comes from. The saying that no two are alike holds well for the big branching flakes, because the shape depends on the exact path the crystal took through the cloud; plain simple crystals can and do look the same, and in 1988 a researcher photographed two that matched.
🎨 How do I keep a winter picture from looking cold?
Leave the snowman white and put all the strong colour into the hat and the scarf — a warm red or orange against untouched paper is what makes the picture feel friendly rather than icy. A pale blue wash behind the three of them suggests a winter sky without darkening the page. Give the bear and the rabbit clearly different browns and greys as well, or the two of them merge into one shape at a distance.
