What’s inside a camel’s hump?
A camel’s hump stores fat, not water. By converting this fat into energy, camels can survive long stretches in the desert where food is scarce. Water, meanwhile, is stored in large amounts within special cells in the camel’s stomach.
How long can a camel go without drinking water?
Camels are remarkably well-adapted to desert life and, depending on conditions, can go for several weeks without drinking. When they do drink, they can take in a huge amount of water in a very short time.
What’s the difference between a dromedary and a Bactrian camel?
The dromedary (one-humped camel) lives in the Middle East and Africa and is adapted to hot deserts. The Bactrian camel (two-humped) lives in Central Asia and can also withstand cold. Wild Bactrian camels are an endangered species.
