What kind of bird is the white heron (shirasagi)?

“Shirasagi” is a collective Japanese name for white herons and egrets, covering several species including the great egret, the intermediate egret and the little egret. These large birds are a familiar sight in rice paddies, rivers and wetlands, walking slowly on long legs and using their long necks to catch fish and frogs.

Why is Himeji Castle called the “White Heron Castle”?

Himeji Castle is finished in white plaster, and that brilliant white exterior earned it the nickname Shirasagi-jo — the White Heron Castle. Its silhouette is often compared to a heron spreading its wings. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993.

What are herons like as a family of birds?

Herons belong to the family Ardeidae, which includes many species worldwide. Besides the white egrets, Japan is home to the grey heron (large and blue-grey) and the night heron, which is active after dark. They are best known for standing patiently in shallow water on long legs, waiting to spear a fish.
