What kind of bird is the shoebill?
The shoebill is a large bird that lives in wetlands across Africa, including Sudan, Uganda, and the Congo. It stands 120-150 cm tall with a wingspan of up to 240 cm. It’s known for its enormous shoe-shaped bill and its famously motionless posture.
Why does the shoebill stay so still?
Shoebills hunt fish, especially lungfish, by waiting for the moment their prey surfaces to breathe. This means they stand motionless at the water’s edge for long stretches, which is why they’re a popular ‘the bird that doesn’t move’ attraction at zoos.
What does the name ‘shoebill’ mean?
In Japanese, the name combines ‘hashibiro’ (wide-billed) with ‘kou,’ referring to stork-like birds. In English it’s called the ‘shoebill’ because its distinctive bill resembles a clog or shoe.
