Seals have no visible outer ears and move on land by wriggling on their bellies, using their hind flippers. Sea lions have visible outer ears and can walk on land using their front flippers to support their bodies. Both swim quickly in the water.
Why are baby seals so white and fluffy?
Newborn seal pups, called “whitecoats,” are covered in soft white fur that camouflages them on snow and ice. They grow quickly on their mother’s milk, and within 2–3 weeks the fluffy coat is shed for fur better suited to swimming.
How deep can seals dive?
Weddell seals have been recorded diving over 700 meters deep and can hold their breath for more than an hour. Their ability to empty their lungs and store extra oxygen in their muscles through high levels of myoglobin makes such long dives possible.
