Where does the shimaenaga live?
The shimaenaga is a subspecies of long-tailed tit found in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island. At only about 14 cm long, it’s tiny — and in winter its round, fluffed-up white body has earned it nicknames like “snow fairy” and “white angel,” inspiring popular photo books and merchandise.
Why does the shimaenaga look so round and white in winter?
In winter, the shimaenaga fluffs up its feathers to trap a layer of air and stay warm, which gives it that round, fluffy white look. In summer it molts into its summer plumage, when a dark marking appears around its eyes.
What does the shimaenaga sound like?
The shimaenaga has a thin, cute call often described as “juri-juri” or “jururi.” It usually travels in flocks, and you can watch groups of them flit busily between branches, calling back and forth to one another.
