🌸 What is Hana Matsuri?
Hana Matsuri is a Buddhist festival held on April 8th to celebrate the birthday of Gautama Buddha. Its formal name is ‘Kanbutsue,’ and it’s celebrated by pouring sweet hydrangea tea (amacha) over a small statue of the Baby Buddha, placed inside a flower-decorated shrine called a ‘hanamido.’
🐘 Why does a white elephant appear in the story?
According to Buddhist legend, Queen Maya, the Buddha’s mother, dreamed of a white elephant entering her side before she conceived him. That’s why Hana Matsuri artwork often depicts a white elephant carrying the Baby Buddha.
🍵 What is amacha (sweet tea)?
Amacha is a tea made from the dried, fermented leaves of the amacha plant (a type of hydrangea). It’s naturally sweet without any added sugar. During Hana Matsuri, it’s poured over the Baby Buddha statue and also served to visitors, said to bring good health.
