What kinds of bears live in Japan?
Japan is home to two species of bear: the brown bear (Higuma), found in Hokkaido, and the Asian black bear (Tsukinowaguma), found in parts of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The brown bear is Japan’s largest land animal, weighing 200–300 kg, while the Asian black bear has a distinctive white crescent-moon marking on its chest.
Why do bears hibernate?
Bears hibernate because food becomes scarce in winter. They eat heavily in the fall to build up fat reserves, then sleep through winter in a den with lowered body temperature, heart rate, and breathing. Technically, it isn’t a true deep hibernation — bears can still react to strong outside stimuli.
Where does the name ‘Teddy’ in Teddy Bear come from?
The name comes from a 1902 hunting trip involving U.S. President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, who refused to shoot a cornered bear cub. A cartoon satirizing the story inspired a toy maker to create the ‘Teddy Bear.’
