Budgerigars are native to Australia. In the wild, they live in flocks across grasslands and dry regions, feeding on grass seeds. They’re the most popular pet parakeet in Japan, and come in a wide variety of colors.
Can budgerigars learn to talk?
Budgerigars are skilled mimics, and with repeated practice they can learn to say human words. Some can even pick up short phrases, not just single words. Males are generally considered quicker to learn speech than females.
What’s the difference between a parakeet and a parrot (cockatoo)?
Parakeets and cockatoos both belong to the parrot order, but the distinction usually comes down to the crest of feathers on top of the head — birds with a crest are classified as cockatoos, while those without one are parakeets. Budgerigars fall into the parakeet group; cockatoos (the white, crested parrots) are a well-known example of the other group.
