What is the Togetsukyo Bridge at Arashiyama?
Togetsukyo spans the Oi River (also known as the Katsura River) in the Ukyo ward of Kyoto. It is about 155 m long, and the bridge standing today was completed in 1934. Its name means “moon-crossing bridge,” said to come from a remark by the retired emperor Kameyama that the moon looked as though it were walking across it.
Why is the Arashiyama bamboo grove so famous?
The bamboo path runs for about 200 m between densely growing moso bamboo 10 to 15 m tall. Its dreamlike atmosphere has made it one of Japan’s signature landscapes. It is at its most beautiful early in the morning or at dusk, and it is a great favourite with visitors from overseas.
What is the Hozugawa river boat ride like?
On the Hozugawa river ride, passengers travel by wooden boat for 16 km down the Hozu River (the Oi River) from Kameoka to Arashiyama. The route was opened up by Suminokura Ryoi in 1606, during the Edo period, and the journey through the gorge takes about two hours today.
