An African elephant’s trunk can grow to about 2 metres. It picks up food, draws water to drink — an adult may take in as much as 200 litres a day — and greets other elephants. The tip carries finger-like lobes, so it can lift something as small as a single leaf.
Why are an elephant’s ears so big?
An African elephant’s huge ears work like a radiator. They are laced with blood vessels, and flapping them cools the blood flowing through, which brings the body temperature down. On the hot African savanna that is no small thing.
