What kind of cake is that, and why does it have a candle?
December 25 is the Christian feast of the birth of Jesus. Japan keeps it as a secular winter occasion rather than a religious one, and the fixed points are Santa Claus, streets of illuminations, and the cake — a round sponge layered with whipped cream and strawberries. Candles usually come in the box with it and are blown out the way they would be on a birthday cake, which is the single flame here. Coloring note: that candle is the only light source drawn in the picture, so if you keep the warm colors close to the cake and let everything further out go cooler and paler, the whole table will look lit by it.
