  • Have you ever seen or held a chick?
  • Do chicks come to mind when you think of spring?
  • Did your family keep chickens when you were a child?
  • Do you enjoy egg dishes? What’s your favorite?
How long does it take for a chick to become a full-grown chicken?

Chicks begin trading their soft down for feathers about 2-3 weeks after hatching, and depending on the breed, become egg-laying adults in around 5-6 months. Meat chickens reach market size in roughly 50 days.

Is it true that a chick imprints on the first thing it sees after hatching, treating it as its parent?

Yes, imprinting really happens. Ground-dwelling bird chicks, like those of chickens, recognize the first moving object they see within hours of hatching as their ‘parent.’ This behavior became widely known through the research of Konrad Lorenz.

Why are chicks and eggs used as symbols of spring?

Eggs have long been symbols of birth, renewal, and new life. Chicks are similarly cherished at Easter and other spring celebrations as symbols of new beginnings.
