Are bats birds or mammals?

Bats are mammals. They have wings, but they belong to an entirely different group from birds: they give birth to live young and nurse them with milk. They are the only mammals capable of true flight, and more than 1,400 species are known worldwide.

How do bats fly in the dark?

Most bats use echolocation. They send out high-frequency calls and read the returning echoes to build a picture of their surroundings, which lets them dodge obstacles and catch insects even in total darkness.

Why did bats become a symbol of Halloween?

Bats are nocturnal and fly through the dark, and the existence of vampire bats helped tie them to vampire imagery. That association is usually traced back to Samhain, the Celtic festival of the dead from which Halloween is said to descend, and bats have been a stock spooky motif ever since.
