A free coloring page of a mother rabbit and her little one, each holding a carnation, with a mug of tea and a scattering of hearts and butterflies around them. It suits a Mother’s Day card, and it works just as well at any time of year simply as a parent-and-child scene. Good for home, the classroom or a care-home activity. When is Mother’s Day?
The date is not the same everywhere. In the United States, Japan, Australia and much of Europe it falls on the second Sunday in May. The United Kingdom and Ireland keep Mothering Sunday instead, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which lands in March or early April. The carnation custom goes back to Anna Jarvis, who handed out her late mother’s favourite white carnations at the first observance in West Virginia in 1908.
Can this coloring page be used for care-home activities?
Yes. A familiar subject gives people something easy to talk about while their hands are busy. Studies of reminiscence work in care settings report modest gains in mood and quality of life, though the evidence for any effect on memory itself is mixed. Open prompts work best — did you ever give your mother flowers, and what did she like? Some people will have lost a mother recently, so it is worth leaving room for anyone who would rather just colour.
Any tips for a neat, polished result?
Work from the largest areas first and save the fine details for last. If you go over a line, a white correction pen can tidy it up. With colored pencils, layering lets you control how light or deep each shade looks.
