Where do Santa Claus and his reindeer come from?
Christmas itself is the Christian festival of the birth of Jesus, held on December 25. The two characters on this page belong to a later folk tradition rather than to the nativity: Santa Claus grew out of stories about Saint Nicholas, and the reindeer are usually traced back to a nineteenth-century American poem. In Japan the day is mostly a family evening with presents and a cake, and the streets are lit with illuminations through December.
