There are eight species of bear in the world, and two of them live in Japan: the Asian black bear on Honshu and Shikoku, and the brown bear on Hokkaido. The other six are the polar bear, the giant panda, the American black bear, the sloth bear, the sun bear and the spectacled bear. A grizzly is not a ninth kind — it is a brown bear, the North American form of the same species.
🍯 Why do bears like honey?
A bear that breaks open a bees’ nest is usually after the grubs as much as the honey — both are packed with the fat and protein it needs. Thick fur and hide absorb most of the stings, though the nose and eyes are not protected, and a bear will back off if the bees reach them.
🎨 What colour should the bear be?
Brown or dark brown is the usual choice. Leave the face white and it reads as a polar bear; fill the ears and a ring around each eye in black and it becomes a panda. Pink or pale blue turns it into a toy bear. Printing the page two or three times and colouring each one differently makes the comparison itself the activity.
