The stripes are camouflage. Broken bands of dark and light melt into tall grass and the shadows of the forest, so a tiger can come close to its prey unnoticed. Every tiger’s pattern is different — like a human fingerprint, no two are alike.
How big is a tiger?
The tiger is the largest of the cats. The Amur (Siberian) tiger measures around 3 metres from nose to tail tip, and the heaviest males can approach 300 kilograms — several times the weight of an adult human — though most weigh a good deal less.
Can tigers swim?
Unusually for a cat, the tiger is a strong swimmer. On hot days it sits in the water to cool off, and it will cross a river without hesitation. Swims of six to eight kilometres have been recorded.
