Hamsters are rodents — relatives of mice and voles — and measure roughly 8 to 18 cm depending on the species. They come from dry country in the Middle East and Central Asia. They are most active in the evening and at night, and spend much of the day asleep in the nest. They tame readily, which is why they are such popular pets.
How far does a hamster run?
On a wheel a hamster can cover several kilometres in one night — five to eight is often reported. In the wild it would travel long distances searching for food, so running is what its body is built for. A wheel is not a toy but a necessity: without one a pet hamster becomes stressed.
