Flamingos take their color from what they eat. Algae and small shrimp contain reddish pigments called carotenoids, and as the bird digests them the pigment ends up in its feathers, turning them pink or orange. Chicks hatch grey or white and gain color as they grow.
Why do flamingos stand on one leg?
The leading explanation is heat loss: standing in cool water with both legs draws warmth out of the body, so the bird tucks one leg up against itself to stay warm. Research also suggests the one-legged stance takes almost no muscular effort to hold steady.
Why is a flamingo’s beak curved?
The downward bend lets the bird filter its food out of the water. A flamingo lowers its head upside down below the surface and uses comb-like plates inside the beak to strain out algae and plankton.
