What folktales or nursery rhymes about rabbits come to mind?
Why do rabbits have such long ears?
A rabbit’s long ears help it pick up distant sounds and detect predators early. The ears are also full of blood vessels and help regulate body temperature — rabbits spread their ears to release heat when it’s warm.
Is the rabbit one of the Chinese zodiac animals?
Yes — the rabbit is the fourth of the twelve zodiac animals, known in Japan as the Year of the Rabbit (u-doshi). During moon-viewing, the pattern on the moon is said to look like a rabbit pounding rice cakes, and rabbits have long been cherished in Japan as a symbol of good fortune.
What do rabbits eat?
Rabbits are herbivores that eat hay (such as timothy grass), vegetables, and pellet food. Because their digestive systems are delicate, careful diet management matters. Rabbits also practice a behavior called cecotrophy — eating their own soft droppings — which is an important way for them to reabsorb nutrients.
