  • Have you ever seen a swallow flying in spring?
  • Have you ever had a swallow build a nest under your eaves?
  • How does it make you feel to know swallows announce the arrival of spring?
  • Were you surprised to learn that swallows migrate from so far away?
Where do swallows migrate from?

Swallows are summer migrants that arrive in Japan from Southeast Asia (the Philippines, Malaysia, and elsewhere) each spring, then head south again in autumn. Their round-trip migration covers several thousand kilometers, and many return to the very same spot — like the eaves of a particular house — year after year.

Why do swallows build nests under the eaves?

Swallows build their nests under the eaves of houses. It’s believed that nesting close to human activity helps protect them from predators like crows and snakes. There’s an old saying that a house where swallows nest will have good fortune.

I heard swallow nests can be eaten — is that true?

The nests used in Chinese ‘bird’s nest soup’ are made by a different species — the swiftlet — from its saliva, and prized as a luxury ingredient rich in collagen. That’s a completely different thing from the mud nests Japanese swallows build under house eaves.
