Do squirrels hibernate?

Squirrels don’t hibernate. In autumn, they bury nuts like acorns and walnuts in the ground to store for winter, then dig them up to eat later. Interestingly, they don’t remember every burial spot — the forgotten ones sometimes sprout into trees the following year.

What kinds of squirrels live in Japan?

Japan is home to the Japanese squirrel (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), the Hokkaido squirrel, and the Siberian chipmunk (both in Hokkaido). The plump, round Hokkaido squirrel is especially popular for its cute appearance in the forests there.

Why do squirrels carry food in their cheek pouches?

Squirrels have cheek pouches that let them carry large amounts of food at once. By stuffing food into their cheeks and carrying it back to their nest, they can store food efficiently in fewer trips.
