The fish is a red sea bream. Its Japanese name, tai, is contained in medetai (“auspicious”), which is why a whole grilled sea bream is served at New Year, at weddings and when someone starts a new job. Mount Fuji stands on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi and is Japan’s highest mountain at 3,776 m; it is an active volcano whose last eruption was in 1707, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013. Seeing Fuji in the first dream of the year is counted as the luckiest omen of all.
Any tips for a neat, polished result?
Only three shapes on this sheet are large: the sky, the water and the mountain. Leave the snow cap and the crests of the waves as bare paper and the picture reads as bright and cold; a light blue in the sky and a deeper blue-green low in the water give it depth.
