What does the name “cosmos” mean?

It comes from the Greek kosmos, meaning order, harmony and the universe — a name usually credited to the neat, evenly spaced ring of petals. In Japan the flower is also called akizakura, literally “autumn cherry blossom,” and is loved as a signature bloom of the season.

How did cosmos come to Japan?

The plant is native to Mexico and reached Japan in the Meiji era, in the late 19th century. It took well to the climate and spread across the country; today whole fields of it are planted as an autumn attraction.

How long does one cosmos flower last?

A single blossom stays open for roughly five to seven days, but the plant keeps sending up new buds, so one clump flowers for weeks. That slim stem bending in the wind is why the flower is traditionally read as a symbol of modesty and purity.
