Ankylosaurus Coloring Page — Free Printable for Kids

An Ankylosaurus coloring page. This is a free printable for kids: rows of bony spikes run down the armoured back, the legs are short and solid, and the tail ends in a heavy club — plenty of separate shapes to fill in one at a time. The PDF runs to four pages — the line art with a small color guide, a plain line-art sheet, a fact sheet in Japanese, and a finished color version — and the dinosaur’s name is printed at the bottom in Japanese katakana. Download and print it; no registration required.

  • That armoured body looks like a tank on legs.
  • Ankylosaurus was built almost entirely for defence. What do you make of a dinosaur like that?
  • Which interests you more, the plant-eaters or the meat-eaters?
  • Have you ever seen a dinosaur fossil in person? What did you make of it?
How was the armour of Ankylosaurus built?

Plates of bone, called osteoderms, were set into the skin itself, forming a heavy shell that still allowed the animal to move. Head, neck, back and tail were all covered, which made an attack from above very hard to land.

How powerful was the tail club?

The knob of bone at the tip reached about 60 cm across. Swung hard, it was powerful enough to break bone: some researchers calculate it could have shattered the leg of a tyrannosaur — an estimate from models rather than anything anyone has watched happen.

What did Ankylosaurus eat?

It was a plant-eater, cropping low growth — ferns, shrubs and other plants near the ground. All that armour made it heavy, and probably slow, but with the shell and the tail club it had little need to run.
