Why do pandas have black-and-white markings?
There are several theories about the giant panda’s black-and-white coat. The dark patches around the eyes may make its eyes look larger to a predator, and the white may work as camouflage in snow. The strong contrast is also thought to help pandas recognise one another.
Is a panda really a bear?
Yes — the giant panda belongs to the bear family. It was once argued that it belonged with the raccoons, but DNA analysis has placed it firmly among the bears. Males reach 100–150 kg, comparable to a large bear.
Why do pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo?
Pandas descend from meat-eating bears but adapted to the bamboo growing abundantly around them. Because they digest it inefficiently, they eat 10–18 kg of bamboo and bamboo leaves a day. A pseudo-thumb — an enlarged wrist bone — lets them grip the stalks.
