Horses are believed to have been domesticated around 6,000 years ago in Central Asia, near present-day Kazakhstan. They’re thought to have reached Japan from the Korean peninsula during the Kofun period (around the 4th–5th century), where they were used for farming, transport, and warfare.
Do horses lie down to sleep?
Horses can sleep standing up, thanks to a “stay apparatus” that locks their joints so they can support their weight without much muscle effort. That said, during deep REM sleep they will sometimes lie down.
