🗣 Conversation Starters — for care activities and family time

  • Have you ever seen an orca show at an aquarium?
  • An orca leaping with its striking black-and-white body is quite a sight, isn’t it?
  • Did you know orcas live together in family groups?
  • Orcas are known as “hunters of the sea” — do you find them scary, or do you think they’re cool?
Are orcas more closely related to whales or dolphins?

Orcas are actually the largest member of the dolphin family, so they belong with both whales and dolphins in a sense. They can grow up to 9–10 meters long and weigh over 10 tons. Known for their striking black-and-white contrast, they are often called “hunters of the sea.”

What do orcas eat?

Orcas are apex predators that hunt fish, seals, penguins, and even blue whales. They work together in groups using sophisticated hunting strategies to corner their prey — which is how they earned the English name “killer whale.”

Is it true that orcas live in families?

It’s true. Orcas stay together for life in matriarchal family groups called “pods.” Some pods even have their own distinct calls, similar to regional dialects — a sign of how social and intelligent these animals are.
