It is. On screen Velociraptor stands about as tall as a person, but the fossils describe an animal roughly 1.8 m long from nose to tail, only knee-high at the hip and weighing something like 15 kg — nearer a turkey than a man. Quill knobs on the arm bones show that it carried feathers as well.
What was the big claw on the foot for?
Each foot carried an enlarged, curved claw on the second toe — up to about 6.5 cm along the outer curve — held up off the ground as the animal walked. It is usually explained as a weapon for gripping and pinning prey rather than for slashing at it. The name itself is Latin: velox, “swift”, and raptor, “robber”.
How close to a bird was it?
Very close. Velociraptor belongs to the dromaeosaurs, the branch of meat-eating dinosaurs that sits nearest to birds, and it shared with them feathers, air-filled bones and a wishbone. Birds are the living members of that same family tree — which is why this drawing takes bird colours just as happily as reptile greens.
