What is the torii gate that stands in Lake Biwa at Shirahige Shrine?
Shirahige Shrine, in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, is famous for the vermilion torii gate that rises straight out of Lake Biwa. Because of it the shrine is sometimes called “the Itsukushima of Omi,” after the celebrated gate in Hiroshima Bay, and the view at daybreak, when mist drifts over the lake, is especially admired.
