What kind of strait is the Kanmon Strait?
The Kanmon Strait is a narrow channel, 500–700 m wide, flowing between Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Moji in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. Separating the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, it is linked by the undersea Kanmon Tunnel and the Kanmon Bridge (1,068 m long). Its swift currents helped the area flourish as a strait city from ancient times.
What is the history of Shimonoseki?
Shimonoseki (historically ‘Akamagaseki’ or ‘Bakan’) is a port town that developed long ago as a key point linking the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea. It was the site of the Battle of Dan-no-ura (1185) in the Genpei War, and where the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed (1895) after the First Sino-Japanese War. It is also famous for fugu (pufferfish; called ‘fuku’ in Shimonoseki).
What is the Sentei Festival?
The Sentei Festival is held every year on May 3–4 at Akama Shrine in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It honors the spirit of Emperor Antoku (the ‘former emperor’), who drowned as a child at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. From the tradition that courtesans once dedicated dances to console the Heike, the festival is famous for its oiran (courtesan) procession.
