🧜 What is a mermaid?
A mermaid is a legendary creature — human above the waist, fish below it — said to live in the sea and to sing beautifully. Some version of the story turns up almost everywhere: the sirens of Greek myth, Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, and in Japan the ningyo of old folk stories, which was believed to bring either a curse or a very long life.
🐚 What else lives under the sea?
Fish, jellyfish, octopus, squid, shrimp, crabs, starfish, dolphins and whales all share the water, and a coral reef adds hundreds of brightly colored tropical fish on top of that. Naming the creatures in the picture while coloring is an easy way to slip a little vocabulary into the activity.
🎨 Any tips for coloring an underwater scene?
Blending blue into emerald green gives the water a sense of depth. A green or purple tail and a different color for every fish keep the scene lively, and pink or orange suits the shells. Leaving the bubbles white makes them read as bubbles.
