  • Do you ever spot birds near your home or on walks? What kind?
  • Do you have a favorite birdsong?
  • Have you noticed that the birds you see change with the seasons?
  • Have the birds you see nearby changed compared to years ago?
Do the birds you can see in Japan change with the seasons?

Yes. Japan has “summer birds” that arrive from the south in spring and summer (like swallows and cuckoos), “winter birds” that arrive from the north in autumn and winter (like swans and ducks), and “resident birds” that stay year-round (like sparrows and crows). The birds you can spot change with the seasons.

Why do birds sing such beautiful songs?

Birdsong evolved for males to claim territory and court females — the more beautiful the song, the more successful the courtship is thought to be. In Japan, the bush warbler and skylark are well known for their beautiful voices.

Is birdwatching difficult to get into?

Not at all — all you need are binoculars and a field guide to get started. You can spot many species in familiar places like parks, rivers, and the countryside. Japan has over 700 recorded wild bird species, offering something new to see in every season.
