  • “Have you ever seen a kingfisher? Where were you when you saw it?”
  • “What comes to mind when you think of a blue bird?”
  • “Do you have memories of fishing in a river or pond?”
Why is the kingfisher called the ‘jewel of the mountain stream’?

The kingfisher’s back is a vivid cobalt blue that can look emerald green depending on the angle of light. This dazzling color isn’t from pigment — it comes from microscopic structures in the feathers that reflect light, known as ‘structural color.’ Because it shines like a gem, the kingfisher is called the ‘jewel of the mountain stream’ or ‘flying jewel.’

How does the kingfisher catch fish?

The kingfisher perches quietly on a branch or post, watching the water’s surface. When it spots a fish, it dives straight down, grabs it with its beak, and shoots back out of the water in just a few seconds — sometimes diving at speeds over 60 km/h (37 mph).

Where can you see a kingfisher?

Kingfishers live not only along clear mountain streams but also in ponds and canals in city parks. They’ve even been spotted in the moat around the Tokyo Imperial Palace — they’re closer to home than you might think. Any place with clean water and small fish is a good spot to look.
