  • “In Japan there is an old saying: ‘a peony standing, a tree peony seated, a lily walking’ — all describing a graceful woman.”
  • “Can you tell a peony from a tree peony? Peonies are herbaceous plants, while tree peonies are woody shrubs.”
  • “Have you ever grown peonies in your garden? What color were the blooms?”
  • “Did you know that peony root has long been used in traditional herbal medicine?”
What is the difference between a peony and a tree peony?

Peonies are herbaceous: their stems die back in winter and sprout again in spring. Tree peonies are woody shrubs whose branches survive the winter. The flowers look very similar, but peony blooms tend to be a little rounder, and they open slightly later (May–June) than tree peonies (April–May).

What do peonies symbolize?

In the Japanese language of flowers, peonies mean “bashfulness” and “modesty” — the blooms close in the evening as if shyly hiding their faces. Pink peonies stand for shyness, and white ones for a happy marriage.

Are peonies used in herbal medicine?

Yes. Peony root has long been used in traditional East Asian medicine to ease muscle pain and cramps, and it appears in several well-known herbal formulas. The peony has been treasured not only for its beauty but also as a medicinal plant.
